Heroines in History

Fifth Annual Essay Contest


The world is full of courageous women, famous and unknown. Victory Press is sponsoring its fifth annual essay contest for youth, to see who they admire and why.

This year's contest is open to young writers around the world.

Contest Rules


Open to youth aged 7 to 15

There will be winners in three categories
a) Ages 7 to 9
b) Ages 10 -12
c) Ages 13 -15

Topic "A Spiritual Heroine in History"
You may write about anything on this topic, including but not limited to
- a nun, a saint, a female pastor
- a bodhisattva, a dharma master, a yogini
- any heroine with strong moral or spiritual convictions

100 - 500 word handwritten essay in English
(Essays that are typed or written on a computer will be disqualified.)

Essays will be judged on originality, content, writing style, pertinence to theme and grammar and punctuation.

Grand prize (1) - $200 plus publication
First prize (3) - $50
Second prize (3) - Heroines in History merchandise
Third prize (3) - certificates

Teachers submitting winning essays will recieve Heroines in History merchandise.

Submit your essay along with a separate paper listing the title of your essay, your name, age category, date of birth, address, phone number, email address (if available), school name, school address and school phone to:

Please submit by postal service, NOT courier service such as Fed Ex or UPS.
If you would like confirmation that your essay has been received, please submit a self-addressed stamped post card with your essay.
If you would like a list of the winners, please submit a self-addressed stamped envelope with your essay.

Teachers: if submitting essays as part of a class project, please have students include your name along with school name.

Submission dates - all essays must be postmarked between March 1 -31, 2004 (Women’s History Month)

Due to the over whelming number of essays submitted, essays postmarked earlier or later or submitted by courier will be disqualified.

Winners will be announced by June 20, 2004.

All winning essays becomes the property of Victory Press. Victory Press may excerpt or publish any of the essays in written or electronic form.
